Plenty of other Classic users are using that workflow. However, if all you want to do on your iPad is browse and edit, doing it the way I've described should work fine. Various other things also do not sync between Classic and the cloud, notably keywords and location data. Collection Sets do not sync however, so you would have to manually create the equivalent of them in the cloud (which are confusingly called Folders there). However, the cloud does not recognise whatever folder structure you are using in Classic, instead organisation is done by using Albums (equivalent to Collections in Classic), and these do sync to each other. Smart previews are generally good enough for browsing and some editing on the mobile device. Being smart previews, they do not count against your 20GB cloud space allowance. They would be uploaded as smart previews, not full originals, to the cloud and from there they are available on any of your mobile devices. The far simpler solution is to sync as many images as you want (all of them if you prefer) FROM Classic to the Adobe cloud.
Any iPad or tablet that is running Lightroom Mobile will be able to view the photos, including anyone logged onto the web version of your collection at about trying to have Lightroom Classic and Lightroom using the same files on the NAS, that simply can't work without risk of serious complications. Once you start shooting your photos will go to a folder on the hard drive of your laptop, and also be automatically added to the new Collection, which in turn will sync to Lightroom Mobile. Setting up Lightroom Mobile and Connecting a Tablet or iPad Clients not on location can sign on remotely to view and rate images in real-time.View images as they come in full-screen mode.
Can be easily incorporated into how you’re already shooting tethered.The same technique can also be achieved using Capture One Pro and the Capture One Pilot app. Using Lightroom CC and Lightroom Mobile you can shoot tethered to Lightroom and have your shots automatically sync to Lightroom Mobile via Creative Sync and those shots will be on all your devices as well as the web simultaneously. From having clients and assistants on set to not being directly next to your tethered laptop, there are plenty of reasons why a photographer may want to add an iPad or tablet into their tethered workflow to view images on the fly.
